Author: Seymour-Haden, Sir Francis (1818-1910) Title: [Antique print, etching] The Egham lock (Hydraulic engineering), 1864.
Description: View on the lock of Egham, close to London. In this state, the print was published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts nr. 17, 1864. This is one of the first known etchings of Haden's production. He was a surgeon by profession but he chose etching as a hobby. As a skilled amateur, he soon developed his technique to a high artistic level. He was strongly influenced by Rembrandt's works and in this case he might have taken inspiration from the Six bridges (Batrsch 208) dating 1645. Signed and titled on the bottom left corner: Egham Lock Seymour Haden. Etching on paper with margins; plate mark: 148 x 225 mm, total: 176 x 267 mm; state III/10; some tape on the top external margin, otherwise in great condition. Schneideman.
