These are the six comedies written by the Roman poet Terentius (ca. 190 – 159 BC) and published by the humanist Daniel Heinsius (1580 – 1655) from Leiden. This text edition appeared in 1618 for the first time at the firm of Willem Blaeu. In 1619 this octavo-print was followed by an vicesimo-quarto print, which was reprinted several times and also – as usual – by his rival Johannes Janssonius. The six pieces which Terentius wrote in his short life (he died at only 31 years old), are ‘Andria’, ‘Eunuchus’, ‘Heutontimorumernos’, ‘Adelphi’, ‘Hecyra’ and ‘Phormio.’ All these comedies are free edits of Greek comedies, this was also the case with the comedies by Platus, although to a lesser degree.
