Description: Portrait of Philips Marnix (1538-1598), writer and statesman, and the probable author of the text of the Dutch national anthem, the Wilhelmus. He also wrote one of the first Dutch translations of the Bible. In the portrait, the bust is directed to the left, the head slightly turned to face the viewer. He is wearing a ruff and a fur-trimmed coat; within lettered oval; coat of arms in a roundel at top left, a biblical scene in a roundel at top right; this latter illustration bears the device REPOS AILLEVERS.The engraving was used as frontispiece to Philippe de Marnix's 'Traicté du sacrament dela saincte cene du seigneur' published in Leiden in 1599.Signed and dated at bottom: 'JDGhein / fe. 1599'. Lettered on the oval frame: 'PHILIPPE DE MARNIX SEIG.R DV' MONT STE ALDEGONDE.AETAT LVIIII'. Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate, total: 97 x 78 mm; in very good condition; mounted on a small sheet of thick paper. New Hollstein 250, Wurzbach 5, Le Blanc 122, Muller 3445.
