Description: Portrait of the French-born artist Bernard Picart in an oval frame, bust directed to right and looking to left, with long curled wig, in oval frame with draped curtain; in the foreground are some allegorical figures alluding to Picard's death, with on the right the grieving History, and on the left a grieving putto and another handing him a laurel wreath; books and artist's tools scattered in foreground; used as frontispiece to Picart's Impostures Innocentes published in Amsterdam in 1734. In brown ink on the bottom margin: 1733.Lettered in lower margin with production details, title and four lines of French: M. des Angles Effigiem pinxit 1732 and Jacobus van der Schley inv. & sculp. 1734 and Bernard Picart / le Romain / Dessinateur et Graveur, / Né à Paris le 11 Juin 1673. Mort à Amsterdam le 8 Mai 1733 and L'Histoire tenant négligeamment un Livre ... / ... si légitimement acquise.
