Title: [Original etching/ets] Two Niobids ['Segmenta nobilium signorum et statuarum.'], 1638 /Twee Niobiden.
Description: A wounded nude man, right knee on the ground, right hand resting on a stone, left hand clutched on his left thigh. The sculpture is now in Paris at the Louvre. Signed and numbered on the ground: 33 FP B and a nude man, with drapery around his arms, running to the left; after a marble statue from a group representing the Niobids. The original sculpture is today at the Archaeological Museum in Florence. Signed and numbered on the ground: FP B 34, monogrammed and the B stands for Bergognone. From 'Segmenta Nobiliarum Signorum et Statuarum', a series of 101 etched plates (frontispiece and 100 illustrations) representing statues from Rome, first published in Rome in 1638, and reprinted five times before the end of the seventeenth century. On verso, on the bottom right corner collector's mark: P in black (stencilled?). Date of publishing 1638. Etching on laid paper; plate mark (1): 212 x 164 mm, total: 293 x 181 mm; plate mark (2): 223 x 163 mm, total: 296 x 180 mm; light browning on the external margins and some foldings, otherwise in great condition.
