Title: Antique print, etching | Brederode castle and its ghost (counterproof)/Kasteel Brederode bij Haarlem, published 1628, 1 p.
Description: View of the landscape surrounding Haarlem, showing a family of farmers walking in the foreground, fields with cattle in the middle ground and the ruins of the Brederode castle in the background; very detailed etching; signed on the top left: 'P. zaeneedam Jnvent. / J.V.Velde sculp.' ; twelve lines of Dutch text below: 'Hier siet gy Bredero... dicht by Bredero'. This plate with other eleven was meant to decorate Samuel Ampzing's Beschryvinge ende Lof der Stad Haerlem in Holland... published in 1628 in Haarlem. On the left portion of the sky, on this impression is visible a very light mirrored image of the ruins. Such ink transfer may be explained by the fact that this plate was folded in the middle while resting in the book (a sort of counterproof).[NL] Boerenfamilie op een landweg met op de achtergrond de ruïne van Kasteel Brederode te Haarlem.
