Description: Allegorical frontispiece and title page to the 1744 edition of Herman Schijn's 'Uitvoeriger verhandeling van de geschied enisse der Mennoniten...' published in Amsterdam by Kornelis de Wit.The decoration predates the edition, in as much the plate is signed and dated: J.C. Philips inv. et fecit 1743.In the original volume, a textual description of the allegory is placed before the plate itself. As from the title page, these pages come from the second edition of the history of the Mennonites. Etching and engraving on paper, letterpress; total: 148 x 98 mm; in very good condition despite the yellowing of the paper and some tears on the margins.
