Description: On the top right a flying (almost) naked Truth removes a curtain to show to humankind what awaits after death. On the top part is a group of Greek philosophers (Griekse filosofen), below a man from the clergy and a man clad in 18th-century attire, are sitting in a sort of vaulted prison, talking. Signed and dated on the bottom left: 'J. v. Schley inv. et fecit 1740.'. On the bottom right: Lettre II; inscribed at bottom in two lines: La VERITE' leve le voile qui dérobe à nos yeux l'état apres la mort. . On verso collector's mark (not in Lugt) with date: Erven Verbeek / Dom. Fam. V.Z. / del (?) 1.1.1984. Date of print 1740. Etching and engraving on paper with margins; plate mark: 137 x 83 mm, total: 230 x 149 mm; despite some light staining on the margins, in very good condition.
