Description: Jan Struys travelled in 1668 to Russia to work with the tsar to build up his fleet. However, he staid for a long time in Russia because of the revolt of the cossacks (kozakken). His experiences were first published in a book in 1676. During his travel to Persia he encountered field battles, sieges, murders, tortures, shipwrecks and earth quakes. He was made a slave and thereafter bought free and returned to Amsterdam in 1673. This books reveals a good overview of daily life in Russia and Persia in the 17th century.
