Title: [The Hague, 1772, Melis Stoke] Rijmkronijk van Melis Stoke met historie-, oudheid- en taalkundige aanmerkingen door B. Huydecoper, Leiden: J. le Maire 1772, (8), 615; (2), 613; (2), 607, (31) pp.
Description: From 1290 Melis Stoke composed a chronicle in verse on the county of Holland. Written in Middle Dutch, this Rijmkroniek was one of the first books to appear in the Dutch language. Among other stories, it described the assassination of Floris V, Count of Holland and Zeeland. Stoke's chronicle was based on written sources, testimonies and his own observations. The first published edition appeared in Amsterdam, 1591 (ed. J. van der Does).Unfortunately, Melis Stoke is not known for his historical accuracy and reliability. Due to his ability to read and write (most people of his time were illiterate), Stoke is believed to have been a monk. The Melis Stokelaan in The Hague was named after him.Haitsma Mulier/ Van der Lem 252c; Carasso-Kok 358  Three volumes bound in half linnen. Frontplates loose, 1 backcover missing. Pages with foxing.
