Author: Laurens Scherm (1689-1701) after Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) Title: [Antique print, etching] The entrance of king William III's in The Hague in 1691.
Description: The procession and festivities in honor of the arrival of king William III's in The Hague in 1691. Lettered below, in Dutch and French: 'Intree van syn Koninglykee Mayesteit in den Hage. / Entree du Roy Guillame dans la Haye le 5 Fevrier 1691'. Likely, the plate has been reworked, especially on the lower part. The signature of the engraver must have been removed. Signed on the bottom right: 'A. Schoonebeek Exc.' Schonebeek, the publisher, was a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe. In the same years - 1691/92 - de Hooghe published with Bidloo a larger version of the publication: Engelands schouwtoneel verbeeldende de voornaamste voorvallen in Yrland van 't Jaar 1690 tot de velttogt van S:K: Mayesteit van Groot Brittanie 1691of which this print is plate nr. 14 (p. 343?). This same plate was used as image in propagandist broadside sheets of the period (see RP-P-OB-76.308 and RP-P-OB-76.307). Etching on paper, with margins, mounted on cardboard with the tip of one margin; plate mark: 152 x 190 mm, total: 170 x 269 mm; rather tired impression, especially in the central area, yet according to the image of the impression at the Rijksmuseum, the metal plate might have been of lesser quality (see B-0696-53). Otherwise in good condition. Atlas van Stolk 2860.
