Description: Beautiful allegorical representation of the coat of arms of the family Pfinzing-Grundlach, used as ex-libris (!).Elaborated architectural design around the coat of arms. Inscribed at the top: 'Patriae et Amicis.'At the bottom is an empty cartouche, probably to be filled in by hand.Signed on the bottom right: 'AK sculps.'On the verso, collector's mark of Charles William Sherborn (1831-1912) [L.648]. He was famous for his engraved ex-libris; he collected about 430 (his almost complete collection is now at the British Museum). He also worked on oil and watercolour. Sherborn had formed a small general collection of prints by Dürer, van Dijck, Rembrandt, & c. The 500 pieces that composed it included engravings, etchings, mezzotints, woodcuts, aquatints, etc. ; they had been collected mainly for the purpose of study and help in his own work.According to a note with the print, this ex-libris belonged also to the collection of the Prince Pfinzing von Henfenfeld, one of the oldes patrician families in the imperial city of Nuremberg (Neurenberg). Engraving on paper, trimmed to image border; total: 355 x 248 mm; in outstanding condition, despite some paper yellowing and light foxing. Traces of previous mounting on the verso. Thieme-Becker (vol 21, p. 199) mentions this plate; Warnecke 248-356.
