Description: The Virgin Mary seated, with hands crossed on her lap. She is crying and in front of her on the ground, towards the right are the tools that were used to torture her son: the pins and the crown of thorns. Behind her a landscape with a view on a fortified construction.Titled below, with a passage from the Gospel of Luke (Lucas): 'Une espée percera ta propre ame.'Signed below: 'J. gole fec: et exc: Amstel: cum Privil:'.On verso collector's mark: VE in a circle: Pim van Eekelen (Amsterdam 1923-1984), L.5101.[NL] Treurende Maria. Maria, huilend en met gevouwen handen, zit tegen de onderkant van het kruis van Christus. Bij haar voeten liggen passiewerktuigen: een nijptang, spijkers en de doornenkroon. Op de achtergrond een stadmuur. Mezzotint on paper, trimmed to plate mark; total: 270 x 190 mm; Hollstein 153. Pasted down on thick paper. Nice impression despite the yellowing of the paper.
