Description: Eight men in a chamber of a pyramid. On the left four Europeans taking a closer look at the pieces of mummies, they have just found. On the right three Oriental men are digging further to look for more treasures. One, in particular, is destroying a casket with an ax.Signed on the bottom right: 'Jan Luyken invenit et fecit'. Numbered on the top right: '231'.This plate was used as illustration in Jean de Thevenot's Gedenkwaardige en zeer naauwkeurige reizen van den heere de Thevenot published in Amsterdam by Jan Bouman between 1681 and 1682. Etching on paper, trimmed close to plate mark; total: 168 x 133 mm; some slight damage on the external margins; some mold on verso; in some areas paper is thinner; nicely contrasted impression.
