Description: View of the Dutch city of Gorinchem. Accompanied by the Latin motto 'Sinimium Intensus Subitò Tunc Frangitur Arcus', meaning 'When expectations run too high, the bow can break, as one needs to be aware that the sound of a lute or the reading of a word can go too far'. Further description in Latin and German on the bottom of the print. The motto is pictured in front of the city by a table, on which a lute, a bow and a book are arranged. ca. 1640.Print number E45 originates from 'Daniel Meisner, Sciographia Cosmica (...), Nürnberg, P. Fürst, 1638-1642'.After Meisner's Thesaurus Philo-politicus (...), 1623-1632. This series of 830 emblematic prints contained eighty prints concerning Dutch and Belgian cities.(Meissner) Overall size: 14,4 x 18 cm; plate size: 9,5 x 14,2 cm. Very good state. Handlaid paper.
