Description: Portrait of Jacob Spex (1704-1775) in an oval medallion held by a muse crowned with laurel.The muse is also holding a sheet of paper on which is reported the title of the collection for which this frontispiece was made, and a lyre. On the right of the potrait more instruments such as a panpipe and another wind instrument. On the background to the right a curtain.Signed on the bottom: 'A. Schouman del. / P.G. van Balen exc. / J. Houbraken sculps'.On the verso collector's marks: Gemeente Museum of The Hague (L. 1096) and another unidentified mark.[NL] Portret van Jacob Spex in een ovaal medaillon dat wordt vastgehouden door een muze met een lauwerkrans op het hoofd. Tevens houdt zij, zittend op een verhoging, een lier en een blad papier vast. Rechts van het portret andere muziekinstrumenten en op de achtergrond een gordijn. Engraving on paper with margins; plate mark 185 x 121 mm, total: 225 x 158 mm; light foxing throughout the paper and traces of previous mounting on the verso.
