Hooft's 'Nederlandsche Historien', drawn by Gerard de Lairesse.The Dutch Virgin sits on her throne in the center of the composition, with bundles of arrows, symbols of unity. Beside her are Mars, god of war and Mercury, god of commerce. At her feet is the Dutch Lion. On the edge of the pedestal two tondos.Titled on the curtain hanging under the lion: 'P.C. HOOFTS / NEDERLANDSCHE / HISTORIEN'. Possibly first impression.[NL] De Hollandse maagd zit op haar troon met bundels pijlen, symbolen van eenheid, in haar handen. Naast haar staan Mars en Mercurius. Aan haar voeten ligt de Hollandse Leeuw. Op de rand van het podium twee tondo's. Engraving and etching on paper with margins; plate mark: 298 x 90 mm, total: 364 x 230 mm; top right corner repaired, plate is not affected. On the verso '1703' in black ink on the top left.
