Description: View on the 'Great Wooden Poort' in Haarlem, one of the twelve fortified city entrances demolished in the course of the nineteenth century. At present times only the Amsterdamse Poort still exists.Schouten depicted the lively atmosphere around the poort, with a fisherman seated beside the river with his dog, men conversing and a boat on the river.Titled at the bottom: 'Groote Houtpoort tot haerlem '; signed in pencil under the drawing: 'Schouten f.' and numbered: 'N. 527'. On the verso of the mount, on the bottom left note in brown ink: No. 527: 160000' Drawing on laid paper, pencil, pen in black ink, brush in grey, within ink framing lines, mounted on thicker laid paper with drawn passepartout in gray wash; total (drawing): 189 x 350 mm.
