Amsterdam: J.J. Schipper, 1663.Johan of Austria, Don Juan of Austria, was a famous 16th century military leader from the Habsburg dynasty. His role in the Battle of Lepanto is famous. Born in 1547, died 1578. He was the illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V (Karel V), making him a half-brother of King Philip II of Spain. Despite his illegitimacy, he was recognized and given high military command. He gained fame in 1571, leading the Holy league fleet against the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto (A naval battle off the coast of Greece). He therefore stopped the Ottoman expansion in Europe. He was a catholic hero.
