Author: Passe, Crispijn van de (1589-1637) Title: Antique Engraving 1612 - Mercury lulling Argus to Sleep - C. Van de Passe, published 1602-1612, 1 p.
Description: One of the famous plates by de Passe depicting Ovid's Metamorphoses. Here Mercury is lulling Argus to sleep by playing a flute. Lettered below, four lines of Latin text:'Centum oculis vigilem Tegees illusit alumntus... Insomnem sopit fistula blanda virum' According to I.M. Veldman these Latin lines are by Franciscus Estius. The traces left by the impurity of the plate suggest that this, rather than a copy as previously thought, is rather an impression after a reworking of the plate with multiple techniques. Engraving on paper, trimmed within platemark; total: 88 x 128 mm; state II/2(?) Hollstein 852; Veldman cat. 14 img. 129
