Description: Half-length portrait of a young man with bow-tie, bust slightly turned to the left, looking at the viewer. He is holding a book with his right hand. On verso is a note where the sitter is identified as Jacob Polar (or Polak) (ca. 1836-??) a merchant in Rotterdam who in 1859 married Rosetta Spier (1829-??).According to the RKD record of Izak Levi Gazan, he was a dentist and an artist working in Rotterdam. He was advertised in 1856 as photographer and portrait painter.Signed and dated on the right: 'I.L. Gazan / Pinxit 1858'.[NL] Borstbeeld van jonge man met boek in de hand. Gazan was volgens Waller werkzaam te Rotterdam. De internet-site Joodse Spier families vermeldt een Jakob Polak, geb. Brielle 1836, in 1859 koopman te Rotterdam en in dat jaar gehuwd met Rosetta Spier.M11135 Oil on panel, without frame; total: 328 x 250 mm; some spores and damages, overall in good condition.
