Stamp of Bibliotheek Seminarie Apeldoorn.First edition of the translation by Vondel of the tragedy ‘Phoenissae’ by the Greek author Euripides (ca. 480 – 406 BC). Vondel based his translation on the translation in Latin by Hugo de Groot in 1630. The play is dedicated to the Mayors of Amsterdam: Lambert Reins, Cornelis van Plooswyck, Cornelis de Vlaming van Outshoren and Gilis Valkenier.Joost van den Vondel (1587 – 1679) was a Dutch poet and play writer. He is considered to be the most prominent Dutch author of the 17th century. He taught himself to read Greek and Latin to better understand the classical literature. ZKL0063b
