Description: With lithograph portrait.George Willem Vreede (Tilburg, April 14, 1809 - Utrecht, June 29, 1880) was a Dutch lawyer, historian, legal historian and professor of constitutional and international law at Utrecht. He was the grandson of Patriot leader Pieter Vreede.Vreede established himself as a lawyer, first in The Hague, where his practice was not going well, and later in Gorinchem. In 1837 he married Anna Catharina Hoff in Oirschot. They had nine children, of whom Albert Cornelis Vreede became a well-known Indologist.Vreede was appointed professor at Utrecht University in 1841, succeeding J.M.A. Birnbaum. He wrote a number of multi-volume works on the history of law and the history of diplomacy, both in French and Dutch. Central to Vreedes historical work was his view that history should be useful and that one should learn from mistakes made in the past.When Vreede died in 1880, Nicolaas Beets delivered the eulogy.Vreede - Dutch history - history of law - Utrecht - biography Bound in half leather and marbled paper, 23.4 x 14.6 cm.
