Title: The herring gull's world. A study of the social behaviour of birds.
Description: London: Collins, 1953 (1st ed.); xvi+255pp., index, bibliogr., 51 photogr., 58 draw. and diagr., 8vo, cloth w. or. dustwrs. Foreword by Konrad Lorenz. Except for a tiny missing piece of paper of dustwrs this is a very good copy. ¶ first ed. of vol. 9 of the scarce 'New Naturalist Series', one of Tinbergen's most famous books. It preludes already the attractiveness of ethology: 'Though strictly biological and objective in his approach, [Tinbergen] is not one of those scientists who rejects any comparison between man and animals as "anthropomorphic."' Author's photographs; v. nice jacket design by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis.
