Ca. 22,5 x 14 cm.J.W. Karsten was head-engineer for 'den Waterstaat en den Publieke Werken'. In 1818 he discovered the peatroad, the so-called 'Valtherbrug', between Ter Apel and Valthe. 'The 'Volksmeetkunde' (popular geometry) is very special among the early Ninetheenth Cenntury Dutch mathematic textbooks. It may be viewed as an exponent both of the attempts to enlighten the masses and the will to disseminate mathematical knowledge'. (cfr. Danny J. Beckers). 'Volks-meetkunde' was published by the 'Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen' (with an introduction by Hendr. Ravekes) because of winning the award of this Society in 1824. Some plates a little damaged; good copy of this important and famous publication.
