Title: Images of Elagabalus. Een wetenschappelijke proeve op het gebied van de Letteren.
Description: Radboud Universiteit, Nijmegen, 2008. 339p. Theses. Paperback. Diss. Radbound Universiteit. ' This volume, a detailed examination of a neglected emperor, is useful for historians at all levels. I. explores the 'image' of Elagabalus (A.D. 218-222) in ancient literary and material evidence and navigated his 'Nachleben' in the history and literature of the fourteenth to twenty-first centuries. This ambiguaous project is largely successful allthough the secont section is the most rewarding (...). Ultimately the value of this book lies in its scope: it manages to be simultateously wide-ranging and comprehensible. Its success is only hampered by the limited interpretation of ancient literary sources: using them to understand the 'real' Elagabalus is not necessarily as effective as exploring how the emperor was moulded into a tyrant through his literary rececption. Nevertheless, this book remains a useful resource for all those interested in Elagabalus and later 'images' of him.' SHUSMA MALIK on the trade version 'The Crimes of Elagabalus' in The Classical Review (New Series), 2012, pp.602-604).
