Title: The Great Boer War
Description: London, Thomas Nelson and Sons. 1900, Second Edition. Hardcover. Used, Rare hardcover without dust jacket, 480pp. No publish date listed, but preface dated 1900. Original blue cloth binding with ornate floral blocking and publisher's monogram to the upper board, and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt. White endpapers blocked in light blue with a framing device around the publisher's monogram. Spine is tanned with rubbed ends. Board edges have minor wear with a dent along lower front edge, corners mildly bumped. Endpapers are tanned and there is a hinge break at title page. Includes rare Conan Arthur Doyle frontispiece and 7 further b&w illustrations, all of which have light foxing to rear side. Reportedly, Doyle took exeption to the use of his image for the frontis in place of that of Lord Roberts which had been used in all impressions of the first edition. He was also displeased by the lack of a map, the loss of revisions and the use of "Sir" before his name. Accordingly, only a few copies were produced and distributed before Doyle demanded production be halted and any existing copies be destroyed. Hence, this is a very rare and scarce copy. Pages are clean and unmarked throughout. AD. Very Good.
