Title: Paolo Mantegazza's Schriften (&) Stets zugkräftiger Saison-Artikel. (Two Publisher's Bookshop Posters and also Order Form).
Description: Berlin, Wiener'sche Verlagsbuchhanddlung, (about 1897). 31.5 x 25.7; 47.1 x 31.5 cm. Printed on one side only on thin yellow paper. With a portrait of Mantegazza, a picture of a man and woman kissing, and on the second poster a photograph of ten books. In German. Partly functioning as book window poster, partly as ordering form! Both folded twice, the second poster obliquely. Good condition almost without creasing. Address of a bookshop on a small strip of paper (0.5 x 7 cm) pasted on the reverses. The Italian physician Mantegazza (1831-1910), from a liberal, Garibaldian family, was a pioneer not only in the description of the effects of drugs (digesting a.o. coca leaves). He was also a pioneer in sexology, liberating physical delight from the shackles of Victorian hypocrisy. His sexological works were not only scientifically sound, but also popular in many countries - like Germany! The first poster praises his most famous sexological works for the bookstore. The second, referring to the size of Mantegazza's books, advertises a series of sensual books about love: real and romanticized. About the love of Napoleon, a gallant duke, the adventures of Casanova and a fatal dancer. designed to please with nice pictures and winsome lettering, but these delicate, large leaves of thin paper were almost never preserved by the booksellers.
