(2), (180), 206; (2), (6), (394) p., numbered consecutively in the second part. Tops gilt. Uncut. With a portrait printed on Japanese paper in both parts (I: Fitzgerald; 2: Bodenstedt). Title pages with Art Nouveau decoration printed in red and black. 1st edition. Spines slightly discolored, but as beautiful as one could wish for: a nineteenth century edition with publisher's dust jackets! Extraordinarily beautiful Art Nouveau edition in richly gilt creamy white cloth with matching dust jackets, not to mention the equally tinted, handmade paper that is a feast for the fingers. Numbered no. 31 of an unspecified deluxe edition (250?). For each poem, the translations of Fitzgerald, Nicolas, McCarthy, Kerney, Whinfield, Garner, Bodenstedt and Schack are compared, but other translations and Omar Khayyam comments are also discussed.
