Description: London, John Walker & Co., 1895. 28 x 19 cm. 28 x 19 cm. Original green cloth-backed cardboard portfolio, printed in gold. Contains 7 photoengraved plates, each with tissue guards. One flap of portfolio loose, cover soiled and discolored, plates a little foxed. Trilby introduced the mesmerizing character of Svengali, to become an eponym for a criminal mastermind. It was a great sensation in its day as a novel and as a play (and later, films). According to a February, 1896 newspaper advertisement, this publication contains, indeed, seven photoengraved plates. An ephemeral publication, complete and very rare.
