Description: Paris, Librarie Chansonnière de Durand, [1849, 1849], and 'À la Propagande Démocratique et Sociale' Felix Malteste & Cie., [1848]. 15 x 10 cm. Leather-backed marbled boards. 328; 108; 8 p. Prefaces in the first volume by Auguste Loynel and Charles Durand. First editions. Binding slightly worn. Political songs, many of them revolutionary or mocking, that were popular in the French uprising in February 1848, when king Louis Philippe had to abdicate and the Second Republic occurred and in the unsuccessful Paris rising of June, 1848. In the first volume earlier songs (like the Marseillaise) are followed by songs from February 1848 and then, June and later songs. These were published in the beginning of 1849 (preface dated December 31, 1848). The second volume contains the songs commenting 1849 news and politics (among others, 'Les Malthusiens'). The tiny pamphlet at the end dates from the fiery days of 1848 itself, about 'General Bogeyman', meaning king Louis Philippe. Because political gatherings were forbidden during the 1830-1840s, meetings and assemblies had to be held in the form of the famous political banquets of 1847, and they took place in already existing singing societies, called 'goguettes'. Popular poet and singer Charles Durand (1804-1863) was a great promotor and publisher of the goguettes. Some of the most influential goguettiers are present in this book with numerous songs, like Gustave Leroy and Auguste Loynel, and Durand himself. Very rare collection in one volume, hot from the great revolutionary days of 1848.
