Description: Amsterdam, A. Wor and Erve G. Onder de Linden, 1730. Modern artificial leather-backed boards. (24),154, (12) p. Title printed in red and black and with a small engraving. With an useful register. 1st edition. Some stains in the preliminaries, otherwise fine. 'Sodom's Sin and Punishment or Severe Vengeance for Cursed Wickedness, and Lot's Wife, turned into a Pillar of Salt'. Leonard Beels (1674-1756), a minister in Amsterdam, describes extensively and in great detail the disasters that happened in Genesis XIX, including the role of salt, of sulphur, of fire, interpreting sodomy as a crime inciting God's anger. Beels also mentions famous Roman Catholic sodomites, stringing a row of popes. He compares the way God shows this with other disasters like the St. Elizabeth's Flood of 1421, when a large part of Holland was destroyed by a flood. This happened during a time that the people of Holland were 'zeer dartel en broodtdronken', 'very frisky and boisterous', wasteful and arrogant.
