Description: Paris, Galerie Contemporaine des Illustrations Françaises, about 1880. Plates measuring ca. 23 x 18 cm, pasted on cardboard and matted, passepartouts ca. 45 x 35 cm. Original woodburytypes with a loose biography on text paper. Woodburytype (known as Photoglyptie in France) was a rare vintage method of reprinting photographs with all subtle middle-tones. Also, unlike photography, the picture doesn't age. A woodburytype looks like it did in the 19th century, no discoloring. The technique was used between 1864 until about 1900, when cheaper (but not better) ways of photo were more readily available. These portraits of 4 then famous Frenchmen are in excellent condition. Nélaton was photographed by Pierre Petit, Morin by Carjat. Ranchon and Vierge by Ferdinand Mulnier, Séchan by Goupil & Cie.
