Kenkeleba Gallery - The Search for Freedom: African American Abstract Painting, 1945-1975

Title: The Search for Freedom: African American Abstract Painting, 1945-1975
Description: New York, Kenkeleba Gallery, 1991. Softcover. Color-illustrated ochre wraps. 139 pp. 65 color plates. 37 African American artists are represented in this exhibition, which catalogues 80 works. Each artist is given a thumbnail biography in the back. Essays are written by Ann Gibson (Two Worlds: African-American Abstraction in New York at Mid-Century); Steve Cannon (Two Generations of African-American Abstractionists: An Overview); Frank Bowling (Some Notes Towards an Exhibition of African-American Abstractionists); and Thomas McEvilley (Some Thoughts on the Significance of the Exhibition). Terrific plates, and an important catalogue. "This exhibition opened a window on history and provided a basis for surveys and retrospectives to come. Moving from the late 1940's to the mid 70's, through roughly three generations of painters, it gave a good indication of how much must be learned about black artists' contribution to Abstract Expressionism and their participation in more recent brands of non-objective art like Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction. But it did so with extraordinary diversity, so that this contribution is never molded into a monolithic chunk, but instead remains the effort of distinct individuals. Its diversity should encourage an equal diversity of opinion and critical response. " - from NY Times review of June 28, 1991. VG+, two small library stamps otherwise appears as new .
