A very large assembly gathered at the funeral of Denis Hugh Lenox-Conyngham, eldest son of the Rev. George Hugh Lenox- Conyngham, Rector of Lavenham, which look place at Lavenham church, on Monday afternoon. The deceased, who was born in Edinburgh in was educated Cargilfield Preparatory School and went to Winchester and Cauis College Cambridge. At Cambridge he took the honours degree in history, rowed in his College eight and won the College pairs. He also won prizes in some lawn tennis tournaments, joined the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) as University candidate and was awarded the first scholarship given by the War Office to the most promising University candidate. was quartered at Aldershot and later at Catterick, where be was given charge of laying out the gardens in addition to his military duties. This was for only a short period however, as the regiment to which he be longed was ordered to China as part of the Defence Force. The educational duties of the regiment were entrusted to him and most successfully did carry out his duties. In China the regiment were first stationed at Hong Kong, where the Transport Officer became ill, and the deceased was asked take charge of the transport, which comprised two or three ships, many motors and hundreds of men—not an easy task to be carried through without a hitch. He was a great traveller and one the first Englishmen to visit Canton after the disturbances, while he also travelled in Northern China, visiting Pekin, Mukden and the Great Wall at a time when it was reported that anti-foreign feeling was so strong that no Englishman dared show his face and even there he was welcomed . He was present at the bathing party given by the Governor of Hong Kong and, when a small child was swept out to sea due to strong currents, he swam out and rescued the child.
