Chapman (born 1721 died 1808) was a student, shipbuilder, vice admiral. He is remembered as Sweden's first great ship designer who made shipbuilding a science. Chapman began his theoretical studies in Stockholm and continued his education in London, where he became an apprentice to Professor Thomas Simpson, who was known for his surface and volume calculations of curved bodies In 1750. After a total of seven years of study in England, France and the Netherlands, Chapman returned to Sweden in 1757. Between 1782 and 1785, ten ships of the line and ten frigates were completed, all built according to Chapman's drawings. In 1783, he was made admiral of the shipyards and in 1791, admiral of the vice admiral. During his active life, Chapman published several well-worked treatises and board work. This is his most famous work, the epoch-making work Architectura Navalis Mercatoria published in 1775. A nice but not superb copy, with good shelf appeal. Priced accordingly. Good-, outer leather of hinges is cracked on front board, light to moderate dampstaining on a few plates of unknown origin since it is not pervasive.
