Title: Deviant Draftmanship: The Art of William Anthony
Description: Kirke Saaby, Stalke Galleri, 2021. Hardcover. Oblong Quarto. Aquamarine cloth boards with inked purple titles. 121 pages : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 23 x 29 cm. "William Anthony's paintings and drawings may be found in the collections of more than 30 museums. The origin of his remarkable style may be attributed to his experience, early in his career, as an instructor of figure drawing. He developed a unique method of teaching beginners. Athony satirized his students' work by greatly exaggerating the errors they made in doing the figure: heads too large, arms and legs diminished. necks skinny. He even had a student who, knowing kneecaps, did elbowcaps. The students not only enjoyed the humor in the lampooning, they learned a lot. And his method evolved into a book, A New Approach to Figure Drawing (Crown, NY, and Odhams, London). It didn't take Anthony long to realize that his classroom satire could be the basis for a new art statement. He started by take-offs of old and new masters, Michelangelo, Vermeer, Picasso and Johns. But soon he graduated into victimizing just about anyone and anything. Deviant Draftsmanship imcludes much of the work Anthony has done since the publication of Ironic Icons (2013), which was another compilation of his paintings and drawings, also by Sam Jedig, and published by Stalke."--From book jacket. As new. Inscribed on the front paste down by the author to an art museum.
