This phrase spread widely through the Christian world of medieval Europe, where it became associated with images depicting skeletons and humans dancing. Its popularity reflected how people in the Middle Ages, enduring hardships including epidemics, wars, and famine, sought to express the unknowable experience of death as a tangible image. By capturing moments our past time, photography likewise makes us aware of how our time alive is limited.
