["Early modern Europe was characterized by a well-known social phenomenon that occurred frequently in this era: the figure of the favorite, who, based solely on the trust of the princely sovereign, held the reins of politics. This 'favorite' was not tied to origin or class, not to religion, not even to gender. There were high nobility favorites as well as those from the lower nobility or bourgeois, Protestant and Catholic (here often with the rank of cardinal) and also female favorites, in the form of mistresses. What they all had in common was that they owed their rapid social advancement primarily to their informal proximity to the ruler and therefore had to justify it.
