Description: New York, N.Y. Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1955. Softcover. Blue stapled wraps with dark blue inked letters on cover. Unnumbered pages, features some b+w scans of original journal. Few documents tell us more about Washington than his Journal. It reveals his courage, his perception, his patience and wisdom in handling the Indians, and his general ability in dealing with men. It is perhaps the most interesting personal record that we possess of the great man. In 1749 the magnates of Virginia formed the Ohio Company to explore and open-up the country to the west of the Allegheny Mountains, and received from the British Crown the grant of a large and vaguely delineated tract in that region. But when they came to take up the territory they found the French there before them and already established on the banks of the Monongahela. The Governor of Virginia, Robert Dinwiddie, disturbed at these encroachments, decided to send an officer to survey the situation. He selected a young Major in the Virginia forces--one George Washington. This expedition was George Washington's first adventure in American history. Fair, some wear around edges of stapled wraps .
