È un'impresa insolita, per loro: non si tratta infatti di dipingere, fianco a fianco, un fregio lungo le parti alte delle pareti, com'era avvenuto prima in Palazzo Fava e poi in quello Magnani. Qui, nell'appartamento a piano terra dell'abate Sampieri, essi dovevano decorare tre stanze a volta; una per ciascuno, quindi; e con scene in veduta scorciata di sottoinsù.Per la prima volta, nella decorazione a fresco, si trovavano per così dire a gara l'uno con l'altro, poco prima della loro definitiva separazione. Solo il tema mitologico li tiene affiancati: ch'è la gloria di Ercole, il dio pagano della forza usata con saggezza; un mito diffuso, perché facilmente accettato anche dalla cultura umanistica cristiana. L'unità di stile, di linguaggio elaborata dall'accademia carraccesca è qui ancora all'opera. Ma le tendenze personali, le caratteristiche proprie e individue dei tre artisti affiorano ormai con chiarezza; e si sente che Annibale ambisce al confronto con l'ambiente romano, ove di lì a pochissimo otterrà i suoi primi clamorosi successi." ["This study illustrates the last joint undertaking of the Carraccis, undertaken shortly before the departure of Annibale and Agostino for Rome, in the summer of 1595. It is an unusual undertaking for them: in fact it is not a question of painting, side by side , a frieze along the upper parts of the walls, as had happened first in Palazzo Fava and then in Palazzo Magnani. Here, in Abbot Sampieri's ground floor apartment, they had to decorate three vaulted rooms; one for each, therefore; and with scenes in foreshortened view from below. For the first time, in the fresco decoration, they found themselves competing, so to speak, with each other, shortly before their definitive separation. Only the mythological theme keeps them side by side: which is the glory of Hercules, the pagan god of strength used wisely; a widespread myth, because it is easily accepted even by Christian humanistic culture.
