The painter Johann Wilhelm Schirmer (1807-63) was the pioneer of landscape painting at the Düsseldorf School of Painting. The catalogue and exhibitions focus on facets of Schirmer's life and work: The Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss presents the extensive sketchbooks, a complex that is complemented by all of Schirmer's known Italian oil studies, which are on display at the museum kunst palast in Düsseldorf. The source volume brings together some as yet unpublished sources and contains the inventory catalogue of Schirmer's so-called "career", a 140-page collection of drawings, sketches and watercolors from Schirmer's estate.
