Title: Die Zurcher Nelkenmeister
Description: Zürich, Scheidegger & Spiess, 2023. Hardcover. Hardcover in tan cloth with color printed dustjacket. 355 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), portraits. Text is in German. Towards the end of the 15th century, two workshops in Zurich produced sacred paintings 'signed' with carnations, representing a final high point in late Gothic art production. While it is assumed that the first of these carnation masters was a member of the Zeiner dynasty of painters, the second is most likely Hans Leu the Elder, to whom we owe the first major topographical view of Zurich. His son Hans Leu the Younger marked one last altarpiece with the carnation sign and represents the transition from the late medieval painting tradition to Renaissance art.0In this first comprehensive monograph on the Zurich carnation masters in more than ninety years, Ulrich Gerster, the art historian and carnation master expert Charlotte Gutscher-Schmid and the historian Martin Illi show us the last flowering of late Gothic work using almost 500 images. The presentation of this important chapter in Swiss art history is complemented by a complete catalogue raisonné, which includes the entire work of the Zurich Carnation Masters. VG+/VG+ .
