Description: Antwerpiae, Gillis Hendricx, 1641. Softcover. No covers, engraved bw title page with etched self-portrait of Antonio Van Dyck followed by 50 leaves of plates, 4 of them single engravings, 46 with double engravings. This set, with a complicated pagination and collation, contains the following (etchings, etchings with engraved background, engraving over etching): Anthony van Dyck (the title sheet), Jodocus de Momper, van Noort, Paul Pontius, Jan Snellinx (Ioannes) AND/OR Joannes Snellinx [there are two etchings one for each name], Franz Snyders, Lucas Vostermans. Then there are the possibles: Simon De Vos D. Antonius Van Dyck, Eques, Mystery Image with no markings (said to be Pierre Symen, engraving (engraver anonymous), end of 17th to beginning of 18th century, included in the Verdussen editions (Verdussen initially kept the GH title page unaltered, but later changed it to include a Verdussen address line). This is either the second state, before the title, or the fourth state, with the title affaced. [Mauquoy-Hendrickx 154].) Together, a lovely and crisp collection of early portraits in vivid and sometimes ornate detail. Fair (missing covers, pages are age toned, foxing spots throughout mainly to borders with the majority of the etchings still fairly clean, curled page edges) .
