Author: CHALKLEY, Thomas Title: Collection of the Works of Thomas Chalkley, in Two Parts (Farrington-Lawton Copy)
Description: Philadelphia, B. Franklinm and D. Hall, 1749. First. Full leather with five passive raised bands. Title-page, xiii, (1), Title-page, 326 pp. (2 blank), Title-page for second part, (blank) pp. 329-590. Introduction (Testimony of The Monthly-Meeting of Friends in Philadelphia..) penned by Israel Pennington. Followed by a Title-page announcing "A Journal, or Personal Account, of The Life, Travels, and Christian Experiences of the Antient (sic), Faithful Servant of Jesus Christ, Thomas Chalkley.." then followed by "The Works of Thomas Chalkley, Part II." Inscription on first title-page indicate this book was a gift from Mary Farrington to her nephew, William Lawton, in 1850. This is a worn copy of a very rare book, printed soon after Franklin took in Hall as a partner in his printing business and handed over the day-to-day operations to Hall. Worldcat locates 1 copy of this first edition, often re-printed. Much writing inside the front cover in ancient ink. Fair only, with defects (substantial contemporary or soon thereafter inked writing on title-page, few tear, much rounding to cover corners and general wear, lacking ffep, small piece missing from second title-page with loss of "ll" in publishers name "Hall", slight marginalia. Not a superb copy by any measure, but an acceptable reading copy and historical relic of Franklin's press. 3 leaves missing. 247-250, 513-514. There are also 2 small pins around a gathering 290-303, holding shetts in which appear to have become loose a very long time ago.
