Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) spent most of his life as a painter, poet, publisher, politician and family man in Zurich. This first publicly accessible art collection in Zurich, which survived both the Coalition Wars and the turmoil of the Helvetic Republic, was donated by the city to the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft in 1818 as a permanent loan. This laid the foundation stone for today's Kunsthaus collection as early as the first half of the 19th century. The catalogue shows works by Gessner in full-page illustrations and also deals with the artists who dealt with Gessner. Exhibition: Kunsthaus Zürich, 26.2.-16.5.2010. VG+ .
