Title: Hirayama Ikuo and the Preservation of Buddhist Heritage: The 60th Memorial of the Legislation for Protection of Cultural Properties
Description: Tokyo, Tokyo National Museum, 2011. Softcover. Blue-tone color illustrated wraps, 192 pp. Profuse color images. Text in Japanese, foreword and list of works in English. Exhibition held January 18 - March 6, 2011. From the foreword: Japanese painter Hirayama Kiuo (1930 - 2009) strove continuously for work peace, having personally experienced the atomic bomb. It was the Silk Road - the route of the transmission of Buddhism-that became the theme of his life's work. Recognizing this same quest for peace in Buddhist thought, which made its way to Japan from India by way of China, he gathered information and visual materials on the Silk Road and related historic ruins over the course of over 150 visits. The current exhibition focuses on the numerous Buddhist sculptures and mural paintings that follow the path of the transmission of Buddhism, starting in India and Pakistan ad moving through Afghanistan, China, Cambodia, and so on, presenting the essence of Buddhist culture that Hirayama desired so deeply to protect. In addition, Hirayama's epic wall paintings of the Daito Saiiki that he donated to the Genjo Sanzoin hall at Yakushiji temple will be exhibited in their entirety for the first time outside the temple. These can be considered his life's masterpiece. VG+, lower corner bumped.
