At the end of 1848 John Sartain and William Sloanaker bought the magazine (The Union magazine of literature & art), moving it to Philadelphia and changing the name to Sartain's Union Magazine. It bore a strong resemblance to Graham's. Among its contributors were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, Edgar Allan Poe, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Thomas Buchanan Read. Poe's "The Bells" and "The Poetic Principle" were among the most important publications, and book reviews, musical criticism, and art exhibitions were also included. In illustration the Union Magazine was especially brilliant; at least three plates were furnished with each number, and some colored lithographs of flowers and other subjects appeared./ Editors: John Sartain, Mrs. C. M. Kirkland, Prof. John S. Hart. Good (Some wear to extremities of boards; Foxing/staining throughout; Back endpaper torn, mostly missing; Previous owners' names, address written in front) .
