Author: Shelton, Gilbert; Rodriguez, Spain (artists). Various Authors Title: The East Village Other Presents Rat [Subterranean News] November 19, 1969. Vol. 4. , No. 51
Description: New York, East Village Other, Publisher, 1969. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid newspaper. 24 pp. Black and white illustrations and comix throughout. East Village Other was an underground newspaper from New York (duh), known for its early embrace of the counterculture and counterculture aesthetics, often using absurdist pieces to provide social commentary. As an early proponent of the underground comix movement, EVO published work by R. Crumb (not in this issue) and others, as well as publishing a paper devoted to comix. This issue is a combo issue of sorts, with the first several pages given over to the other noted underground newspaper from New York, RAT Subterranean News. These pages discuss the incarceration of RAT staffer, Jane Alpert, charged with a variety of bombings. While the article denied she had any involvement, she eventually jumped bail and lived "underground" until 1974, when she came out of hiding and admitted her role in the bombings. Alpert, in this article, contrasts her experiences with the justice system with that of the female members (Afeni Shakur and Joan Bird) of the Panther 21 in New York. While there were actual bombings in Alpert's case, her bail was $20,000; bail was set at $100,000 for each of the defendants, despite no bombs going off. with comix by Gilbert Shelton and Spain Rodriguez; a rear cover comix providing satirical sex toys for sale (ok, at first we fell for the 'Parisian clit whip,' which seemed a bit out there for our tastes, but, hey, what do we know?); along with the usual movement, music, drug and counterculture musings, etc. With a full page comix by Spain Rodriguez. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present, slightly diagonal. Moderate toning. Good .
