Page, Walter H. et al. - The Independent. May 24, 1883

Title: The Independent. May 24, 1883
Description: New York, Henry C. Bowen, Publisher, 1883. Tabloid. Side folding tabloid journal. 32 pp. Disbound from a larger work. The Independent was a long running newspaper that promoted Congregationalism and advocated for abolition and women's suffrage, among other social issues. This issue contains a rather confused article contemplating white and Black churches. While the author thinks churches should welcome all races, he thinks efforts to force a mixed congregation would backfire, and that in the end the various races would prefer to be with their own race. Another article recalls the author's theological conversation with a Black porter, although written using dialect that resorts to stereotype. GOOD condition. First several pages tenuously attached, and may come off with much further handling. Three binding holes on the left edge. Paper toned, with some creasing and wrinkling. Small address label on the rear page, that of Elroy M. Avery, perhaps the author and historian. Paper a bit brittle with flaking at the corners. One inch tear affecting the center fore edge margin of all pages. Slight horizontal fold crease present. Good .
